Sprint CEO says paying over $15 billion for the iPhone was money well spent

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse spoke with a group of reporters touring Sprint?s headquarters, and told them that the deal to get the iPhone on the Sprint network was too good to pass up; even though Sprint had to commit over $15 billion in purchases to Apple over the next four years. The news comes from a report by Ina Fried of All Things D.

?I think the No. 1 thing was getting the call from Apple that they were interested in at least having the opportunity,? Hesse said. Of course, the company and its board had to take a hard look at the economics. Selling the iPhone is good for the long term, Hesse said, noting that customers are more valuable in the long term. But, in the short term, it is costly, as the company spends more in subsidies to attract those iPhone buyers.

?We committed to $15.5 billion over four years in purchases,? Hesse said. ?That?s a large commitment. ?He said Sprint looked at Apple and its popularity, and ?we saw no reason to bet against Apple.?

Hesse also talked about Sprint?s other gamble with its investment in WiMax rather than LTE. Hesse claimed that the choice to run with WiMax was all down to timings. If Sprint ran with WiMax it would be the first network with an operational high speed network. If it had chosen to run with LTE, it would have been last to offer LTE; as it didn?t have the spectrum to launch a reliable service.

Sprint may have the iPhone on its network but the iPad has remained elusive. When Hesse was asked about the possibility of having the iPad on the Sprint network, he declined to make any comment.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is calling for "something dramatic" to help the economy recover, but he's not saying exactly what.

The Republican presidential says he opposes another federal stimulus package and new government programs. He also says that if the Federal Reserve were to undertake another "massive" program of buying government bonds and mortgage-backed securities, with the goal of driving long-term interest rates even lower, it wouldn't help the recovery.

"I can absolutely make the case that now is the time for something dramatic and it is not the time to grow government. It's the time to create the incentives and the opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses big and small to hire more people and that's going to happen," Romney said an interview aired Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

"You're going to see that happen in this country but not under this president."

Democrats tried to cloud Romney's message Sunday by renewing calls for the former businessman to release years of personal tax returns. Romney insisted as recently as Friday that he won't release more than two years of returns, although most presidential candidates, including his father, released many more.

"What is it that he is hiding?" Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said on "Fox News Sunday."

He also addressed Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid's recent decision to share an anonymous claim that Romney hasn't paid taxes for 10 years.

Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus, on ABC's "This Week," branded Reid a "dirty liar." Romney in recent days called on Reid to "put up or shut up."

Axelrod said Romney and his campaign "can resolve this in 10 seconds. They can release the tax returns."

As each side debated Romney's personal taxes, the Republican candidate is trying to promote an economic agenda he said repeatedly this past week would create 12 million jobs in his first term. Pushed to explain how, Romney said in the CNN interview, "That's what happens in a normal process."

"When you come out the kind of recession we've had you should see this kind of job creation," he said. "Good things happen when you have a private sector that's thriving."

Campaigning in Indiana on Saturday, Romney attacked what he called "an extraordinary series of policy failures" from President Barack Obama.

The Republican candidate planned to spend Sunday and Monday in private meetings at his vacation home in New Hampshire.

The former Massachusetts governor so far has been slow to release specifics for his economic plans. He repeated his opposition to Obama's tax plan that would preserve tax cuts passed in the George W. Bush era for all Americans but those who earn more than $250,000.

Romney would preserve the tax cuts for everyone, although he has not detailed how he would pay for the plan.

"I also hope people understand when they talk about raising taxes on the wealthy ? as the president does ? he is also talking about the same tax rate that applies to small business," Romney said. "The great majority of small businesses pay taxes at the individual rate so as he raises these taxes "on the wealthy" he is raising taxes on small business."

The Romney campaign on Sunday also released a television advertisement highlighting his recent trip to Israel. In the ad, he criticizes Obama for not visiting the Jewish state. The president last visited Israel during his 2008 campaign.

While in Israel, Romney said that cultural differences help explain the economic disparity between Israelis and Palestinians. The comment prompted accusations of racism from Palestinian leaders.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) ? Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, was found dead Sunday morning in his room at the club's training camp at Lehigh University. He was 29.

The police chief at Lehigh, Edward Shupp, said a 911 call was made at 7:20 a.m., and that Garrett Reid was deceased upon a policeman's arrival at the campus dormitory.

"There were no suspicious activities," said Shupp, who said a cause of death had not been determined.

The Eagles practiced after gathering for a team prayer, but Andy Reid was not present. Assistants Marty Mornhinweg and Juan Castillo ran the team's walkthrough, and will oversee the team until Reid returns.

"This is a tough morning for all of us in the Eagles family," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. "Garrett grew up with this team and this makes this news even harder for us to process."

The death comes after years of drug problems involving Reid's sons, Garrett, and younger brother, Britt.

Garrett Reid had rebounded from his troubled past and was assisting the Eagles' strength coaches at camp. He and Britt were arrested on drug charges after two separate traffic accidents in 2007. Garrett Reid was imprisoned off and on through 2009.

"We've been with Andy for a long time. He's always been strong for us; we're going to be strong for him right now," Roseman said. "As a father and a friend, we're all hurting."

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said, "This news is heartbreaking for everyone in the Eagles family. Our hearts go out to Andy, his wife, Tammy, and their children."

Here's another upcoming class at Arnolds. You are to pick the papers you'd like to use before the class. I created this as a good way to organise all that paper that the kids bring home. There's a note for this a permission slip for that... invitations etc etc etc. So now each person's paperwork is filled neatly away. You can add to this as much or as little as you like. For mine I added a pen holder, shopping list, important info pouch and diary all decorated to match. This is a very inexpensive idea using an old box and some patterned paper, paint and braiding.

Below is another version I made for a friend and I added the pen holder and sticky tape dispenser and shopping list and post it notes pad.

Time running out for Russia trade bill: U.S. lawmaker

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Time is running out for Congress to approve a Russia trade bill before Moscow formally enters the World Trade Organization in August, potentially putting U.S. exporters at a huge disadvantage, a senior Republican lawmaker said on Wednesday.

Representative Kevin Brady said House Republican leaders would not schedule action on the measure until two conditions are met: a firm date for Senate action on the bill and a firm indication of how many House Democrats will vote for the bill.

Congress is set to adjourn this week for a month-long recess, while Russia is set to formally enter the WTO on August 22.

"We're going to need those two things to move PNTR (permanent normal trade relations) this week. We're going to need them to move it in September, and we're going to need them to move it in a lame duck session," Brady said, referring to different possible time frames for action on the bill.

"Lame duck" refers to the legislative session that takes place after the November election and before new members of Congress are seated in January.

"The sooner we get those two elements solidified the better," Brady said.

Congress needs to approve PNTR to ensure that U.S. exporters share in the market-opening concessions that Russia made to join the WTO. It would establish PNTR by repealing a mostly symbolic Cold War-era restriction on trade between the two countries.

The White House has called PNTR its top legislative trade priority this year, but House Speaker John Boehner last week said President Barack Obama had not done enough to whip up Democratic support for the bill.

Both the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee have approved PNTR by wide bipartisan margins.

Brady said it was unclear how many Democrats in the House supported the measure and Republicans would not be able to pass the bill on their own.
